Florian Camerer,
Senior Sound Engineer,
ORF & PLOUD
09.15 - 09:45

Keynote:  Loudness Management in Today’s Systems

  • Why the loudness issue is a collision of biology and technology
  • Equal loudness curves / Weighted curves (LEQ) / Dialnorm related to ITU BS 1770 loudness measurement
  • Why dialnorm doesn’t work well
  • AGC versus 5 band compression with limiting versus perceptual loudness control
  • Recommendations for loudness management

Harris

09:45 - 10:15

Topic: Loudness Issues from the viewer’s perspective

  • External Drivers
  • Analysis of Loudness Complaints
  • Why do we have these problems
  • Will R128 Solve them

Phil Greene, Lead Technologist,
Technology Division, BBC

  • Which consequence has the gate?
  • What is Loudness Range for and what not?
  • Active normalization or Metadata?
  • What to do with the archive?
  • Dangers of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ processor solution
  • Quality aspects of processor solutions

Florian Camerer, Senior Sound Engineer,
ORF & PLOUD

10:45 - 11:15

Morning Coffee in Jarvis Foyer and hands -on demonstrations

11:15 - 11:45

Keynote: Delivering Consistent sound to the Consumer on any device any time anywhere

  • Deciding on a target: regulators, program producers, consumers, all of these?
  • Methods for satisfying each target
  • Are compliance and quality the same or even related?
  • The reality of broadcast
  • A simple rule for making it all work

Tim Carroll, President & Founder,
Linear Acoustic Inc

11:45 - 12:15
Q&A Panel (Speakers from the morning sessions)

Lunch in Jarvis Foyer

AFTERNOON SESSION

13.15 - 13:45

Keynote: End-to-End Loudness Control

  • Measurement and control in the professional space
  • Rendering of loudness control metadata in the end user device
  • Single ended loudness control in the end user device

Jeffrey Riedmiller
Director, Sound Platform Group

13.45 - 14:30

Topic: Real time and File based analysis & correction

  • The idea of a file-based MXF and loudness compliant server
  • Intergrating plug-ins
  • Off-line loudness scanning and report generation
  • Monitoring
  • Workflows in broadcast, archiving, quality control and post production environments

Peter Poers, Managing Director, Junger Audio & Chris Hollebone, Sales Operations & Marketing Manager, Merging Technologies

14:30 - 15:00

Topic: Loudness normalisation in distribution

Distribution aspects of audio normalisation:

  • Why do audio levels always seem to be different?
  • How to align incoming loudness levels?
  • What happens in the receivers at home?
  • How to ensure transparent audio quality from studio to the end-users?
  • What to do with analogue transmission?

Richard van Everdingen, Broadcast & Audio Consultant, Delta Sigma Consultancy

15:00 - 15:45

Afternoon Coffee in Jarvis Foyer and hands -on demonstrations

15:45 - 16:15

Broadcaster Case Study: Deploying loudness in France

  • The – very  short – historical French situation (loudness complaints, several laws but no action for 20 years)
  • The tools (first ITU loudness measure better but not perfect, strong faith in EBU work group, R128 achievement)
  • A coordinate preparation (waiting for end of R128 work : loudness conferences, measures experimentations, authority learning)
  • A single French recommendation (R128 fully compatible + additional limits, signed by all broadcasters and advertisers)
  • A legal text (after 4 laws but no action, the French recommendation becomes the legal root of action)
  • Today's reality (loudness deployment calendar, new mixing methods, new tools, overall satisfaction)

Matthieu Parmentier, Innovations & Developments Manager, France Télévisions

16:15 - 16:45
Q&A Panel (Speakers from the afternoon sessions)
16.45 - 17.00
